In Yaounde’s Mimboman neighborhood, 29-year-old martial artist Martin Mangwandjo trains scores of students with precision and power, despite using crutches due to a congenital condition. Inspired by Chinese martial arts films as a child, he taught himself before receiving formal instruction from Cameroonian and Chinese teachers. His breakthrough came when a visiting Chinese master, Xiao, noticed his talent and mentored him, teaching him kung fu, tai chi, traditional medicine, and Chinese culture.

Now a well-known figure in Cameroon’s Chinese martial arts community, Mangwandjo runs two training centers and heads the Temple of the Golden Knights. As the world marks the International Day of Persons with Disabilities, he says martial arts gave him strength, confidence, and purpose, and he hopes more Africans—especially those with disabilities—embrace Chinese martial arts and cultural exchange.
