According to an Ethiopian government official, the partnership in technical and vocational education and training (TVET) has played a pivotal role in enhancing the quality of China-Ethiopia cooperation within the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI). Teshale Berecha, Ethiopia’s State Minister of Labor and Skills, emphasized the significance of deepening TVET collaboration with China. The aim is to nurture the essential human resource capabilities needed to build a skilled workforce that can readily adapt to the ever-changing demands of the global job market. The state minister underscored the essential role of the TVET sector in executing infrastructure and socio-economic development projects associated with the China-proposed BRI, emphasizing, “Human resource development is the critical impetus to ensuring the quality of infrastructure to be built as part of the BRI.”
Ethiopia’s government places strong emphasis on the TVET sector as a means of generating a well-trained workforce capable of supporting ongoing and future investments across various development sectors, including agriculture, infrastructure development, manufacturing, and services. Berecha expressed gratitude for the collaboration in the TVET sector between the two countries and highlighted the intention to elevate this partnership to a higher level, deepening the existing bilateral connection. Ethiopia is currently undergoing reforms in the education and training sector to enhance the quality and relevance of its offerings to the labor market.
Berecha commended China’s significant progress in improving its training and education system and expressed Ethiopia’s aspiration to further harness the thriving China-Ethiopia cooperation in the TVET sector. He emphasized the need to draw from China’s experience in achieving rapid growth, particularly in the context of technological advancements and labor market dynamics. Within the framework of BRI cooperation with China, Ethiopia has witnessed tangible outcomes in crucial infrastructure development projects, including roads, railways, industrial parks, energy initiatives, and export-oriented industries.
