Gabonese President Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema emphasized the enduring strength of the China-Gabon relationship, which has spanned 50 years. Established on April 20, 1974, the two nations elevated their ties to a comprehensive strategic cooperative partnership in 2023. Trade between them reached $3.79 billion that year, with China maintaining its position as Gabon’s largest trading partner for 11 consecutive years.
Nguema acknowledged China’s investments in key sectors such as forestry, oil, mining, and construction, which have invigorated Gabon’s economy. Chinese support has been instrumental in infrastructure, energy, education, and healthcare. Notably, China financed three modern vocational training centers in Gabon, and the country became Central Africa’s first to test 5G technology through cooperation with Chinese enterprises.
The healthcare partnership between Tianjin People’s Hospital and Melen Hospital has also improved medical services in Gabon. Nguema expressed hopes for deeper cooperation with China, especially in infrastructure development, transportation, energy, and water resources to boost living standards.
Nguema praised China’s modernization, noting that its development model offers valuable lessons for African countries. He highlighted the significance of the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) and the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation, which have strengthened China-Africa ties. He also stressed the shared values of multilateralism, mutual benefits, and collaboration on global issues like counter-terrorism and climate change.
